Settling into Buja

On the Rusizi river.

Almost 3 months in and I think the dust has settled and we are finding our groove.

V and I still look at each other every once in a while and go, “ Are we really living in Bujumbura? How did we get here, how did this happen?!” (cue Talking Heads, once in a lifetime) It’s sometimes hard to believe that earlier this year we were living our normal lives, not even sure if I would get an invitation to orientation, and now here we are!!

For this post just going to drop some photo’s below of what we have been up to!

Petit Bassam resort on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. The lake has dozens of small restaurants and hotels like this sprinkled along the shore. It’s difficult to see in the photo, but the mountains of the Congo on the other side of the lake are massive and gorgeous!

Rickety but functional Merry go round- just make sure your tetanus is up to date before mounting!

Just finished this short read from a Burundian/French author and loved it! The history of this region is complex and this was a snapshot into what some of the dark years were like.

One of the popular excursions in Bujumbura is a boat ride down the Rusizi river.

The river feeds into Lake Tanganyika and is known for Hippo and crocodile sightings. It starts with an impressive performance by local drummers.

Searching for Hippo’s!

Hippo’s found!

We also had our first visitor! My cousin came from the bay area for two weeks.

The joke at the embassy is that family members hear Burundi and are like wellllll maybe I’ll visit you at your next post. Everyone was quite impressed that we already had a visitor and one so soon. What can i say, we are very convincing!

Chotu and Tia on a walk.

Cafe Gurmond- a popular rooftop restaurant with great bread, sandwiches and fresh juice!

Next up Christmas and New Years!! Time is really flying by.
